Registering to become a student at Literacy Volunteers is very easy.
Just call our office at 203-576-7012 to make an appointment. You can also refer a potential student.
When you come in to meet with one of us, we’ll ask you for basic background information about yourself and your goals for the future.
We’ll assess your reading and writing skills and ask about your availability to determine which class would best meet your needs.

Classes are held at various libraries, churches and community centers in the Bridgeport area.

We have morning, afternoon, evening and weekend classes.

How do I know which class will be right for me?

When you come in to register at Literacy Volunteers, we will assess your skills and ask about your availability.
We’ll assign you to a class that is suited to your skill level and your schedule.

How often do classes meet?

Most classes meet once or twice a week for 2 hours.

How many students are in a class?

Class sizes generally range from 1 to 8 students. Larger classes may have 2 tutors.

Is there a cost for the classes?

No.

When do classes start and end?

You can register at any time of year to start class. If there is a class that meets your needs, you will join that class. If not, you will be placed on a waiting list and we will contact you as soon as we have a tutor who can work with you.

How long will I be attending class?

We ask that you commit to attending class for at least a year or until you reach your goal (such as passing the GED) but many students decide to continue for several years.
